The moon is obscured by the shadow of the earth when it comes between the earth, the moon and the sun during the orbit of the sun.  

The moon comes exactly between the earth and the sun.  On the day of the full moon when the earth comes between the sun and the moon its shadow falls on the moon.  Meanwhile when we look at the moon from the earth that part looks black to us. This phenomenon is called lunar eclipse.
